A National Natural Landmark, Grand Caverns was discovered in 1804 by Bernard (Barnette) Weyer while trying to retrieve one of his hunting traps. Weyer's Cave opened for tours in 1806, making Grand Caverns the oldest continually operating show cave in the world!

10 GREAT THINGS TO DO IN GROTTOES
• Take a Tour of Grand Caverns – If you haven’t been through the caverns ever, or lately, you should do it. It’s amazing!
• Go Fishing or Tube the River – Several fishing opportunities along the South River and at Lawhorne Pond (site of Kids Fish Day), or float down the river for some cooling, peaceful relaxation. Careful of the rapids…safety first!
• Walking and Hiking Trails – There are great sidewalks and a walking path all through town plus a hiking trail that starts near the Stone Lodge and goes to the top of Cave Hill. Great views at several look out points!!
• Music Events – There are several music events in town through the year. A Bluegrass festival in May and October and Friday night bluegrass in the park in July.
• Watch a Ball Game – Lots of games are played in John Painter Park during the warm months. Including little league, travel team tournaments, and the Rockingham County league. Visit RCBL Online
• Play in the Parks – Both of our parks have fun things to do like having a get together under our shelters, playing a round of putt-putt, tennis (courts can be used for pickleball as well), watching the kids play on the playgrounds or just sitting and watching nature.
• Enjoy Events and Parades – All year long we enjoy events and parades in town, like the Veterans Day Ceremony, First Responders Appreciation Day, the holiday parade and more! Follow the Town of Grottoes on Facebook for updates.
• Shop and Dine Local – There are opportunities to shop in town where your dollars stay local plus the community has a yard sale in both the spring and fall, plus two small business Saturdays during the year. Grab a bite to eat while you’re out too!
• Run in a Race or Cheer Them On – Grottoes’ terrain makes it great for foot races with two 5Ks and a 10K held here each year. If you aren’t running come out and cheer them on! Visit page
• VOLUNTEER – Being an active member of your community is rewarding. If you have an idea and an opportunity to volunteer some time or service, let town staff, or your Council members know so we can help you make it happen!
